The global financial crisis stemming from the collapse of the U.S. subprime mortgage markets has had a profound effect on financial professionals and their engagement with their financial expertise worldwide. For example, there is widespread sentiment among Japanese financial market professionals that the era of finance in which financial professionals and their expertise are highly valued has ended. On the one hand, it is clear that the kind of innovation and intellectual excitement that led to the expansion of credit derivatives is unlikely to gain momentum again in the near future. On the other hand, the current acute sense of profound uncertainty facing Japan and elsewhere seems to demand precisely the kind of technique for embracing and dealing with uncertainty that finance has long ostensibly represented. In this paper, I offer an ethnographic glimpse into this predicament confronting global financial market professionals in Japanese financial market specialists’ competing responses to the crisis of Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) in the aftermath of the nuclear power plant accident that followed the massive earthquake and tsunami of March 11, 2011. The focus of my analysis is the tension between the collective market effort to protect TEPCO and its bond holders in which TEPCO was deemed “too big to fail,” in the names of victims of the accident as well as of the Japanese financial system, and the sporadic effort to arbitrage TEPCO bonds, in the name of reforming the Japanese financial system altogether. What was striking was the way both sides shared deep skepticism about the efficacy and validity of their financial expertise and resignation that TEPCO, and the entire national economy, would certainly sink, albeit preferably slowly. The paper examines financial market professionals’ unexpected agreement to embrace the end of finance and its implications for the critique of capitalism.

Stacey Swigart, curator of the Centennial Collection at neighboring Please Touch Museum, presents on japan's 1876 inaugural presence in the US and the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. Shofuso's site, near the location of the first Japanese garden in North America, has showcased Japanese culture from 1876 to Hiroshi Senju fusuma paintings in present day. Followed by a light reception.

The Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, The Johns Hopkins University - Communications Coordinator
Currently, they have an opening for a Communications Coordinator in the Office of Communications. The office is responsible for the school’s media relations, website, social media presence, publications, special events, external affairs and branding/marketing. Reporting to the Director of Communications & Marketing, the Coordinator is expected to contribute to projects related to all of the above office responsibilities. (IV) Fellowship and Award Opportunities (in order of application deadline)
PENN STUDENTS ONLY: Christopher H. Browne Center for International Politics Faculty & Graduate Student Research Grants - rolling application deadline
The Christopher H. Browne Center for International Politics invites applications from Penn standing faculty and graduate students for research grants for the fiscal year 2012-13. The Center is interested in supporting scholarly projects that are related to all areas of international relations, but we are particularly interested in research bearing on international security and the international political economy.
Over the course of an academic year, faculty may receive up to $5,000 and students may receive up to $1,500 to cover research expenses. Grants can be used to support travel and field research, to purchase supplies, and to hire research assistants.
We invite all faculty and graduate students at Penn whose research interests fit within the broad mission of the Browne Center to submit applications. Applications should be no longer than five pages and include the following:
- A description of the research project.
- A budget explaining the expenses the grant is to cover and a statement of all current and pending support for the research project.
- The principal investigator's curriculum vitae.

PENN STUDENTS ONLY: Y. H. Park Fellowship in Korean Studies - deadline to apply: early May 2012
The Y.H. Park Fellowship funds a Ph.D. or a master student in the humanities, social sciences, international management, international studies, or fine arts whose primary research area is Korea and whose dissertation will be on Korea. Applicants are expected to continue their scholarly activities outside of Korea after completion of their degrees. They must have sufficient Korean-language proficiency to use Korean-language sources in conducting research and writing dissertations. The Park Fellowship will provide funding of approximately $33,000 (sufficient to cover the cost of Reduced Ph.D. Tuition, a 12-month stipend and health insurance). In order to apply, student must first secure nomination by the head of his or her department/program. Each year, the deadline is usually in early May. Asia Rice Foundation U.S.A. - deadline to apply: June 1, 2012
ARFUSA will grant up to $3500 for travel, scientific research, education or artistic work about rice in developing rice-producing countries. You must be a scholar registered at an accredited institution of higher education or a faculty member at such an university and have a letter of support from your national rice foundation or a US university faculty member. Creative artists must illustrate their qualifications.
Applications that involve travel and study of US-based scholars at IRRI or other developing country locations are encouraged, but you must provide a full project budget and tell us where you will get the rest of the money you need.

East Asia Institute (EAI) Fellows Program
on Peace, Governance, and Development in East Asia - deadline to apply: July 16, 2012
The East Asia Institute (EAI) based in Seoul, South Korea, invites applications for its Fellows Program on Peace, Governance, and Development in East Asia. Funded by the Japan Foundation, the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange of Taiwan, and YBM/KIS, an education institute of Korea, the Fellows Program targets East Asia specialists with cutting-edge expertise in political science, international relations, and sociology for an international exchange program with the goal of encouraging interdisciplinary research with a comparative perspective in the study of East Asia. The EAI Fellows present seminars and lectures, based on an unpublished article on current issues submitted solely for the purpose of the Fellows Program, at two or more Partner Institutions in East Asia.
Program: The Program is designed to give the Fellows the flexibility required to bring out the best of their expertise in seminars and lectures. Fellows choose the subjects of their articles, seminars, and lectures within the broadly defined themes of peace, governance, and development in East Asia in order to make the visitation an integral part of their on-going research. Fellows are free to decide how they will divide their time among two or more Partner Institutions, giving a seminar and a lecture apiece at each of the sites chosen. The Partner Institutions are the East Asia Institute in Seoul, Fudan University in Shanghai, Keio University in Tokyo, Peking University in Beijing, and National Taiwan University in Taipei.
Eligibility: The EAI Fellows Program is intended for tenured, tenure-track, and untenured East Asia specialized professors based in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia, and other non-Asian regions, conducting research in the fields of political science, international relations, and sociology.
Selection Process: The EAI will select up to five Fellows in 2012. The representatives of the Partner Institutions plus an Advisor based in the United States select EAI Fellows through an annual competition.
Support: The program provides funds ranging from USD 8,000 to 10,000 for each of the Fellows. The grant covers an honorarium for the article, seminar, and lecture as well as the cost of ground transportation, round-trip economy-class international air flight, hotel accommodation, meals, and a per diem for a total of three-week stay in East Asia (see comments on Application Forms).

Music of Korea (MUSC-166/EALC-084) - Fall 2012 Course Opportunity
There is a new course, Music of Korea (MUSC-166/EALC-084), which Dr. Matthew Schreibeis will be teaching in fall 2012. This course will survey the music of Korea with the goal of placing specific musical genres in cultural and historic contexts. A wide-ranging approach will emphasize the diversity of Korea's musical styles, including, court, folk, popular (K-pop), film, and contemporary classical music. No prior knowledge in Korean language or culture is presumed.
The course will meet Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1:30 until 3:00.

Beijing Foreign Studies University, Master’s in East-West Relations - deadline to apply: April 30, 2012
The Center for East-West Relations (CEWR) at Beijing Foreign Studies University in Beijing, China is now accepting applications for the East-West Relations M.A. program to begin Fall 2012. This unique M.A. program focuses on the importance of culture in international diplomacy and international communication. The curriculum is constructed in a way to provide students with an understanding of the background assumptions and priorities that inform Eastern and Western policies and practices. All major courses will be taught in English, but students will be expected to participate in Chinese language courses during the two-year program.
We believe that this is an excellent opportunity for students to learn about culture in an international setting with some of the best scholars of comparative politics, philosophy, and culture.

Kathmandu University - Centre for Buddhist Studies is now accepting applications for its Tibetan, Sanskrit and Nepalese summer intensive language courses offered in 2012. This summer the language programs include three levels of colloquial Tibetan (beginning, intermediate, and advanced), beginning Sanskrit, and beginning Nepalese. An introductory Buddhist Studies intensive, combining study and a meditation practicum, is also offered.
The courses, which are structured as a full immersion into the local languages and cultures, include the opportunity to live with Tibetan and Nepalese families. All classes are held at Ka-Nying Shedrub Ling Monastery, just a few minutes' walk from the Great Stupa of Boudhanath in the Kathmandu Valley.
Bioethics in China Course (Open to all alumni, business professionals, and external graduate students) - deadline to register: May 15, 2012
The University of Pennsylvania will be offering a graduate course in the Fall semester, titled “Bioethics in China: Research, Industry, and Practice”. In addition to lectures at Penn, students will travel to Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai (August 24-September 4) where the program will include site visits, academic lectures, and meetings with policy makers, Chinese and expatriate business leaders and others. This course is open to alumni, business professionals, and external graduate students (closed to undergraduate students).
This course will provide executive students a broad understanding of bioethical issues in China, specifically:
• Challenges in conducting business and research in China, including organizational practices and business ethics.
• Ethical considerations in outsourcing clinical trials to China
• Pharmaceutical marketing practices in China
• Physician-Patient interactions and the notions of autonomy
• Ethics in health policy
• Intellectual property and the regulatory landscape in China

Meiji University, Summer Program in the Social Sciences - deadline to apply: May 18, 2012
This two-week summer program is designed for non-Japanese students to study law, politics and economics in socio-cultural contexts in Japan. All courses are conducted in Japanese in an interactive way. The program will provide the opportunity to discuss hot issues in contemporary Japanese society. Course topics include the constitutionality of citizen lay participation as lay judges in court trials, recent developments in Japanese-style employment, Japanese views of life and death, problems arising from the shrinking population, the future of the Japanese economy, the feasibility of East Asian Community and others.
The program also includes field trips to important institutions such as the national Diet, the Court, the Tokyo Stock Exchange, a law firm and a prison.
Meiji University is located at the center of Tokyo, where participants will be able to see and learn how legal, political and economic institutions function in the Japanese society. We welcome everybody who would like to learn about Japan in Japanese.
Scholarship Information: Meiji University Summer Program in the Social Sciences has been selected as one of Student Exchange Support Programs 2012 (Scholarship for Short-term Study in Japan) by JASSO (Japan Student Service Organization). This course is designed to train you to speak and listen to Mandarin Chinese, and to introduce you to reading and writing the language. At the end of the course you will be expected to perform in all four skills—speaking, listening, reading and writing—at a basic level of proficiency. You will not only learn to speak the language; you will also develop an understanding of Chinese interpersonal behavior. The ultimate goal is to teach you not just to speak Chinese, but to function successfully in Chinese culture using Mandarin—to present yourself as an intelligent person in Chinese culture using the Chinese language. You will learn to speak and perform correctly in a variety of social situations. In each setting you will learn how to perform in the Chinese language in a culturally appropriate way.
This course is appropriate for:
1) Students with no Chinese background. The course will assume that you have no exposure to Chinese language.
2) Students with one to two years of high school or college Chinese in courses that focus on reading and writing. This course focuses on oral proficiency. Some of our most successful students have come from Portland area high school Chinese programs.
3) College students, high school students (age 15 or higher), business people, and others are welcome to apply.
Korean Studies Dissertation Workshop - deadline to apply: May 1, 2012
The SSRC Korean Studies Dissertation Workshop seeks to create a sustained network of advanced graduate students and faculty by providing the opportunity to give and receive critical feedback on dissertations in progress. The workshop is open to participants from all fields in the social sciences and humanities and from institutions throughout the US and Canada. Individual students lead discussions of their projects with mentor faculty and student peers from various disciplines to receive creative and critical input on improving their fieldwork plans or writing strategies. Based on narrative project descriptions submitted as part of the application packet, participants will prepare a synthetic essay incorporating all projects, from which broader methodological and thematic discussions will be developed and incorporated into the four-day agenda.

This year's mentor faculty include Suk-Young Kim (University of California, Santa Barbara), Katherine Moon (Wellesley College), Robert Oppenheim (University of Texas at Austin), and Jun Yoo (University of Hawaii at Manoa).
The workshop welcomes applications from students who have not yet begun fieldwork, who are currently in the field, and those who are in the process of writing their dissertations. In most cases, the SSRC will fully cover participants' travel, lodging and meals for the duration of the workshop. Limited funds are available for participants traveling from outside the United States. Funding for the program is provided by the Korea Foundation.
Eligibility and Application
- Full-time advanced graduate students, regardless of citizenship, who are enrolled at US or Canadian institutions are eligible for the workshop.
- Applicants must have an approved dissertation prospectus at the time of application, but cannot have completed writing for final submission.
- Special consideration will be given to students from universities that are not major Korean Studies institutions.
A narrative description of the dissertation topic, short application form and a letter of recommendation from the student's primary advisor are required as part of the application.

The HPAIR 2012 Asia Conference seeks to bring together future and current leaders from around the world to engage in a five-day dialogue, addressing the events that have helped to shape the current status of Asia on the world stage. The conference will challenge its participants to think critically about questions surrounding Asia's future. In the wake of the recent global financial recession, what should Asia do to recover from and prevent similar meltdowns in the future? How should Asia respond to the threat of nuclear proliferation in North Korea and military instability in other parts of the world? How can Asian countries preserve their traditions while the pressures of globalization push them towards modernization? What roles should governments and businesses play in bridging the numerous expanding gaps found both between and within nations?
As we turn the corner on the first decade of the 21st century, the decisions made today will prove critical to the success of Asia tomorrow.

American Association for Chinese Studies 54th Annual Conference at Georgia Tech, Atlanta - deadline to submit: May 1, 2012
We invite scholars of all disciplines in Chinese Studies to submit proposals for papers, roundtables, and panels for the 54th Annual Conference of the AACS, hosted by the Georgia Institute of Technology. The program committee prefers proposals for complete panels, including a panel chair, 3-4 presenters of papers, and a discussant. The committee especially welcomes theme panels that help integrate the conference.
Examples of possible themes:
·“Challenges to Leadership and Succession in China and Taiwan”
· “Issues of Science and Technology in Greater China”
· “Cultural and Social Spillovers of Cross-Strait Economic Integration”
· “Social Change and the New Generation of Chinese”
The committee welcomes proposals for individual papers and will attempt to place the presenter on an appropriate panel. Too, the committee encourages proposals from graduate students; the AACS has initiated an award for the best graduate student paper at the conference. As in past years, proposals for roundtables featuring special events of broad significance, such as the 18th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party, are invited. Overall, our goal is to construct a balanced program, including panels representing the humanities, the social sciences, education and business-related subjects.
The deadline for panel and roundtable proposals is April 13, 2012, and for individual papers May 1, 2012. Korean Studies Advancement Center in Andong - deadline to submit: July 30, 2012
The Korean Studies Advancement Center in Andong is seeking original academic papers in English on any aspect or topic related to Andong in terms of history, culture, society, philosophy, religion, folklore, literature, music, geography, or any other field of interest. Those who submit a paper by May 15, 2012 and are selected will be invited to the Andonghak (安東學, Andong Studies) International Conference to be held on June 25-26, 2012. This conference, which is being held to encourage scholars to conduct research on Andong-related topics, is open to anyone who is interested in Andong Studies.
Length of paper: more than 8,000 words

Global Exploration for Educators Organization (GEEO) is a 501c3 non-profit organization that runs summer professional development travel programs designed for teachers.

World Savvy, an educational non profit, is currently accepting applications from high school youth and teachers from all disciplines for a FREE cultural exchange program to Bangladesh. It’s a nine-month program beginning in Fall 2012, with a month of travel to Bangladesh in winter 2012 (tentatively scheduled from Dec. 16, 2012-Jan. 11, 2013). We’ve found that the most effective way to find our talented cohort is through word of mouth, especially from teachers or mentors pointing out this opportunity to youth or peers who would be particularly well suited for this.
