Applications are now invited. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, be enrolled in a graduate program at Penn, and have research or career plans that require the use of an East Asian language. The languages most commonly studied are Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, but other East Asian languages may also be approved. Successful applicants will be expected to study an intermediate or advanced East Asian modern language in an approved intensive summer course. Study may be conducted in the U.S. or abroad, but travel funds are not usually available. Intensive beginning language study may be approved, if the applicant already has attained an advanced level of proficiency in another East Asian language, but such study normally may be conducted only in the U.S. The Fellowship covers tuition and provides a stipend of $2500. Applications should be received by March 6, 2008, by the Graduate Chair of the Department or the Associate Dean of the School in which the applicant is enrolled. (The Department or School will nominate the applicants, forwarding his or her application package to the Center by March 16, 2009.) Applications are due February 6, 2009, to the Applicant's Department The Center for East Asian Studies will award seven FLAS Fellowships for AY 2008-09 to graduate students planning to pursue modern East Asian language study at the intermediate or higher level. The FLAS Fellowship pays tuition and general fees and provides an annual stipend of $15,000. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, be admitted to or enrolled in a graduate program at Penn, and have research or career plans that require the use of an East Asian language. The languages most commonly studied are Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, but other languages of the region may be approved. Awards are made by the Executive Committee of the Center for East Asian Studies. Successful applicants must then enroll both semesters of the Fellowship year in an intermediate or higher modern East Asian language and in full-time study in either East Asian Studies or professional studies related to East Asia . The Center for Korean Studies offers grants to Penn graduate students for research in Korean Studies Two grants, each in an amount up to $2,000, will be awarded this year to assist graduate students of Penn in their research related to Korean Studies. Any student enrolled in a graduate degree at Penn is eligible to apply for funds to support his or her research. Awards will be made on the basis of the competitively established merit of the proposals. Application Materials: 1. Application form The applicant should complete the application form, including the proposed budget form on the reverse side of the form, describing all anticipated costs of research-related activities that the grant might be applied to. Korean Research Grant Application Form 2. Research proposal This should include the title of the proposed research, a detailed description of its intended content and how the research will be conducted. The applicant should explain how the research is important to his or her academic project. This should be a maximum of 2 pages, 12-point, single-spaced. 3. Faculty recommendation letter The applicant should include a recommendation letter that will support his or her application, in particular addressing how the proposed research will be significant to the applicant's academic work. The deadline for application is January 12, 2009.
