Collaboration with the Graduate School of Education

Fall 2001 marks the beginning of a new collaboration with the Graduate School of Education. Teachers interested in China and in earning credits toward their Act 48 requirement can now enroll in a comprehensive course on Chinese history and culture. The course, taught by Penn professor Paul R. Goldin, will give teachers an overview of history, art, architecture, philosophy and various other topics in China. Collaboration with the Penn Graduate School of Education (GSE) is ideal for both institutions: GSE's experience enhances the Center's ability to meet the needs of high school teachers while GSE benefits from the solid scholarship offered by faculty in East Asian Studies. In the future we hope to expand this collaboration to include a course on Korea.

Phila-Nipponica

The Center for East Asian Studies and the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia are committed to increasing understanding and awareness of Japan in the schools of Greater Philadelphia through our Phila-Nipponica program. Sixty teachers have already participated in this intensive and rewarding experience. The program is funded through a generous grant provided by the United States-Japan Foundation. Project Activities include:

  1. A series of intensive seminars given by Japan specialists primarily from the University of Pennsylvania faculty.
  2. An eighteen-day study tour of Japan in the summer of 2002.
  3. A follow-up weekend at which teachers are helped to develop new curricula on Japan.
